The Baby Weight

Saturday, June 8, 2013

The baby weight… it came. Oh yes, it came, with full vengeance. Being 5'11" I can carry a bit more weight without anyone noticing… but when you go from 145 pounds to 200 pounds within 9 months you notice alright! Say what you please, "Oh isn't that how much you are supposed to gain while you are pregnant?" No actually, you're only supposed to gain 25 to 35 pounds your whole pregnancy, but thanks! We can pretend!

Before I got pregnant I heard that Jessica Simpson gained over 60 pounds with her pregnancy. I was disgusted. I thought to myself, "How can someone just let themselves go like that? She must have been trying to gain weight! I  mean was she having french fries and ice cream for all three meals?!"

Then it happened, I got pregnant. During the first trimester I was nauseated and so I ended up losing 4 pounds. Long behold, one of my coworkers even said, "I don't think you'll gain much weight Britney!" And then much to my dismay the college semester started again, and I was doing full time school and working full time as a registered nurse (RN) at the hospital. Between being nauseated, doing 13 credit hours, and working three 13-14 hour shifts (shifts that are supposed to be 12 hour shifts, but you get there at 5:45 AM and sometimes don't get out until 7:45 PM on busy nights) I didn't find time to work out or to eat right. I was so busy that we were lucky if we got a home cooked meal. Consequently the pounds started to pile on.

Let's rewind to before Sam and I got married, I was working out with my friend Kaitlyn everyday. We would get up at 5:30, head over to Golds Gym and do our weight lifting class on Monday's, Wednesday, and Fridays, and then do an hour of cardio after that (either running or the elliptical). On Tuesday's and Thursday's we would still get up at 5:30 and then do 1.5 to 2 hours of cardio. On top of this I was eating clean and at 130 pounds I was in the best shape of my life.

Once I met Sam I loosened up on my workout routine and put on what us newlyweds like to call "Happy Fat", about 15 pounds of it to be precise. So you can imagine my dismay the night before I went into labor when I stepped on the scale and was a whopping 200 pounds on the dot. How did I get 70 pounds away from the best shape of my life in just two years?

This brings me to the reason why I created this blog. Because I am not going to allow myself to become a "fat" mom. I am not going to let my "baby belly" define me. I am not going to sit on the couch and say to myself "Oh I'm just big boned" or "It's just in my genes" and certainly not "My metabolism has just slowed down since I had a baby". Because none of those things are true. They are not true for me. And they are not true for you.

We are all capable of losing the weight, wether that weight was brought on by a pregnancy, by food addiction, by emotional stress, whatever! We are all capable of losing it! I have no reason to be over weight. You have no reason to be over weight!

This blog will follow my journey of losing the weight because I will hold myself accountable for losing this weight. I want to be a motivation for anyone who has struggled with weight. When I was standing on that scale at 200 pounds I thought to myself, "Well at least now I can show everyone that losing the weight is possible!". LET'S DO THIS!

P.S. Subscribe below to continue getting updates on my progress! I'll continue posting healthy recipes, dieting tips, and monthly progress pictures. If you are trying to lose weight, let's do this together! Have questions? Feel free to e-mail me at FitMomBritney@gmail.com.

  1. I am so proud of you..you are doing much better than me sadly. I have to say that reading this it sounds like we are so so similar...except I was 145 when I got married. when I had my baby I was 200 pounds also right before I had her..I am 5'9" and never really showed weight much either. I am ashamed and frustrated to say though that I am in the same place as you right now, 158 pounds and trying but my baby is 10 months old!!! Not 3 like yours..you are an inspiration girl :) keep up the good work I will be following your progress thanks for sharing!

    1. Wow you've already lost so much weight though! Don't get discouraged, you'll get there! I once heard someone say, "it took 9 months for me to put on the weight so it will take me 9 months to lose it!" Sometimes those last 10 lbs can be the hardest but they'll come! Glad you liked the blog, thanks for reading!

  2. Do you breast feed? Before I was pregnant I lost 20 pounds by cutting out items like Dairy and Red Meat. I am being told now though that I should eat these items for my daughter to get her nutrition. She was born May 2nd and I am currently at 156 and it seems like the scale is climbing despite my efforts other then going by what I know.

    1. My baby was a stinker and never latched well so I exclusively pumped for two months. That was hard but worth it because it's so much better for your baby! Sometimes when you are breastfeeding your body thinks that it needs to hold onto some fat for "emergency" stores for the baby, so that might be what is happening! Many women I've talked to have said they didn't lose the rest of their baby weight until after they stopped breastfeeding. But keep breastfeeding as long as you can for your baby... the benefits are countless! You don't HAVE to eat those foods as long as you are making sure you are getting enough calcium and iron from other sources. Continuing to take your prenatal vitamins helps as well!

  4. Thanks for the inspiration/pep talk! My baby was born just two days after yours (I think~March 24 is her b-day) and I have been frustrated with how slowly I've been losing the weight, but I just calculated and realized I've lost 25 lbs! My goal is to lose 60 overall since I gained that happy newlywed fat too ;) How long do your walks usually take? And does your little one stay happy the whole time? Mine sleeps for most of our walk but it is usually only 45-60 min.

    1. No way, that's awesome! And yeah, got to love that newlywed chub! ;) So I have my little dude on a feeding schedule, so I'll do the feeding and then immediately after I'll start my walk. For example, he eats at 10 AM, so I'll feed him and start the walk and then his next feeding isn't until 1 PM (every 3 hours) so he does just fine! I make sure that I don't go out when it's too hot (anything over 85 degrees) which has been difficult the past month because it's consistently been over 100 degrees! My walks usually take about two hours… so by the time I actually start the walk and get back home it's time to feed him again.

  5. I am so glad I found your blog! I just had my baby last week, June 25, and I have been so disgusted with myself because of how much weight I gained while I was pregnant. Before I got pregnant, I was in the best shape of my life at 130, which took a lot of hard work. The day before I had my baby, I weighed 190! Not to mention, I'm only 5'2". I am so worried I won't be able to get back down to what I was before. I am excited to follow your blog and see your progress. Thank you for the inspiration! I definitely needed it!

    1. I completely understand! Don't get discouraged, you're still in the beginning stages! Technically you can't work out strenuously until 6 weeks after delivery, but if you're feeling up to it go on some walks with baby around your neighborhood. Right now will be a great time to really focus on your diet and eating clean until you can start really working out! You've got this! Keep me updated on your weight loss journey!

  6. I was so excited to find your blog! I am 6', so I completely understand the ability to carry more weight when you are pregnant. I gained 55lbs. and had also broken 200 the day I delivered, and a year later, I am almost back to normal. As an athlete my entire life, it was and has been super hard to adjust to the new way of working out (with an awesome little man in tow); however, it is so great to read your blog and gain inspiration to keep getting my butt in gear. Thanks a bunch

    1. Congrats! That's awesome! Yeah being so tall can be a blessing in that aspect… when we gain weight there is just so much more area to put it! Happy to hear you like the blog, thanks for reading! :)

  7. I'm 14 weeks pregnant and I was thin before I got pregnant, but not in the best shape. I completely related to balancing work, graduate school, and marriage with a healthy lifestyle- its hard! I'm terrified that I will gain too much, but I'm HUNGRY all the time. I'm also short (5'1") so anything I gain shows up quickly. I'm hoping to use this blog to motivate me to eat right during the pregnancy and help me to lose the weight after. Thank you for starting this blog! We can do this :)

    1. Oh man, when I was pregnant I was NEVER full. Literally, never. I could keep on eating and eating and I would never have that reflex to stop haha! If I did my pregnancy again I would stop worrying about how much weight I was gaining and just concentrate on eating clean. So often women think that pregnancy is an excuse to eat terribly for the next 9 months, don't fall into the trap! Don't change your eating habits, eat a clean diet, and you'll find that getting your body back after baby will be significantly easier. Glad you like the blog! Thanks for reading :).

  8. I feel like I could have written the majority of your blog myself! I am totally in the same boat. Tall (6'1"), used to be in great shape (played volleyball in college), gained too much weight while pregnant, and have a husband with a crazy busy schedule and an 8 month old who is starting to hate being in the stroller for more than 20 minutes! I am so happy I stumbled upon your blog, thank you for being so open, relatable, and CUTE!

  10. just wanted to say thank you for the motivation:) I had my son 6 months ago-in Feb and he was actually due late April. Yes. Late April. He was 10 weeks early, and spent 6 weeks in the NICU 1.5 hours away from where we live, and to top it off-my husband is an Officer in the Marine Corps and unfortunately deployed a month after our son was born. SO I've been busy taking care of our little one on my own preparing for daddy to return shortly, but needing some extra motivation from time to time to return to 'pre baby' before my husband comes home! :)

  11. I found your blog today on Pinterest and it comes at a great time! I have been looking for motivation from someone who is finding success in losing weight the good old fashioned way...not with fancy (and expensive) diets and gym equipment. I don't have a child yet - although might be pregnant here soon. I want to make a real effort to keep my health in check as I progress.

A lot of what you've mentioned about life after marriage (mostly the happy fat stuff) resonates with me so much. I need to stop making excuses for reasons to not work out or eat right. Thanks for the motivation! I'm a motivated follower!
