Farmor's Famous Chili

Monday, October 21, 2013

With the leaves changing colors and weather getting chilly I can't help but post a little bit of my favorite soul food. This recipe is grandma Farmor's recipe. In case you were wondering, Farmor is grandma in Swedish. My grandma was from Sweden so we called her Farmor and my grandpa is called Farfar. Farmor stands for father's-mother and Farfar stands for father's-father… if it were my mom's parents it would be Mormor for mother's-mother and Morfar for mother's-father. Random fact of the day for you! ;)

Any who, let's get down to business. I'm going to give you her recipe… as well as a few tweaks you can add to it to make it a little more clean and lean!

Ingredients
1 yellow onion
1 green pepper
1 lb of lean ground beef
1 30 oz. can diced tomatoes
1 30 oz. can of mild chili beans
1 6 oz. can of tomato paste
1 TBS of Chili Powder
2 TBS sugar (uhhhhh……… just trust me on this one)
Greek Yogurt
Low Fat shredded Cheddar
Green Onions

Instructions
Serves 6
1. Chop onion and green pepper into small pieces (I like mine 1 cm or smaller).
2. Brown beef with onion and green pepper. Stir often to break beef into small pieces.
3. Once beef is browned, add diced tomatoes, chili beans, tomato paste, chili powder and… yes, sugar. When I cooked this recipe myself for the first time I thought felt so weird adding sugar to my chili… but I think it's definitely the secret ingredient!
4. Simmer over low heat for 1 hour. Stir often.
5. Serve chili with cheddar, chopped green onions and greek yogurt (in place of sour cream).

Looking to make this recipe a little more lean? Try swapping out the ground beef for extra lean ground turkey, not adding the sugar, and serving without cheese. Once you do that it's all turkey and vegetables!

This recipe with some warm apple cider on the side is one of my families favorite halloween traditions. You've got to try it!

P.S. thank you for all of your prayers, love, and support for my mom and family! Surgery went well… we're now just waiting to hear back the results of the lymph nodes and that will determine her course of treatment. Praying that the lymph nodes test negative!

  1. I have a Farmor and Farfar too!! People always look at me strange whenever they hear me say their names. So good to see another person with grandparents that go by those names :). Ps love the blog! I can't go to sleep because I'm sucked in to each post.
