Why I'm just not into 'Normal Barbie'

I'm all about her cellulite. I'm all about her acne. I'm all about her stretch marks. I'm all about her imperfections.
You know what I'm not all about? Her BMI (Body Mass Index) that borderlines obesity.
The "Lammily Doll" was made in opposition to Barbie dolls outrageous and unachievable body measurements to try and teach little girls what women actually look like. The measurements of the lammily doll mirror the average 19-year-old girls's measurements as reported by the CDC (center of disease control).
So what's the problem? The problem is that the doll mirrors a woman that is 5'4" and 165 pounds... that means her BMI is on the higher side of overweight and nearing obesity.
Unless she's an active gymnast whose full of muscle... I don't think that a doll with that high of a BMI makes for a doll with a desirable body image either. No more of a better example than barbie! They're on two opposite ends of the spectrum. We should teach our daughters to want to be healthy! To exercise because it's good for our heart and health... not to make us skinny. Teach them to eat foods that nourish our body and to simply treat our bodies right! Teach them that our bodies are amazing creations that do so much for us... the least we can do is take care of them as well.
Over 1/3 of the United States is obese. Not just overweight, obese. That statistic is so upsetting to me my eyes literally watered writing it. Forget about body image, as a nurse I have to reiterate that it's not just about body image. Rather it's about the health of your body. Obesity increases your risk for nearly EVERY disease out there. Heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attack, stroke, depression, miscarriage or infertility... The inside of our body is what suffers from obesity.
Forget fat shaming... I want America to lose the weight for their own good. For the overall health of the nation. To be able to experience life to the fullest and be the energetic, healthy and happy woman/man they've always dreamed of.
Forget the Barbie doll, forget the Lammily doll... why not a woman who is an average height, athletic build and a healthy weight? That's the doll I would support... and leave the cellulite because 'aint nobody going getting away without some cottage cheese.
Looking at some of the Lammily dolls I don't know if they were spot on with their height and weight calculations... the girl doesn't look like she's exactly nearing obesity. Maybe they're just saying that it's the average 19-year-old girl's weight for publicity??
If you haven't figured it out by now I'm a little opinionated. I consider myself an extroverted introvert... meaning a lot is going on in my mind (introverted) but I'm very vocal about it (extroverted). I think it can make for good writing as long as I'm not offending too many people! Does anyone else understand what I'm getting at here?

I UNDERSTAND! I think the Lammily doll is boring, unimaginative, and I would not have been interested in it when I was a kid. Lammily is not an escape from the norm...Barbie was (IS!)!! Isn't that the point of TOYS? I mean, should we get rid of Transformers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? My Little Ponies? Its a TOY. Let your imagination run wild. PARENT your children so that they don't let a TOY define their standard of livings and self image. geez. I think it's ridiculous. I think obesity is OUT of control, at 30%+ of Americans being in this statistic...it is incredibly unhealthy and people need to start taking personal responsibility and action. ugh. Long story short, I hear you and I don't think Lammily really solves or helps anything. (PS, 165 pounds for a 5'4" woman is pretty darn thick. I didn't even reach that weight at 41 weeks pregnant and 5'7". Just saying.)
ReplyDeleteJust read this and I totally agree! It's not a fat and thin problem, America needs to fix its health problem. I just wish people would stop body shaming each other and try to just lead healthier lives. PS: LOVE your blog!
